The quality of MDF (Medium Density Fiberboards) is typically better than chipboards or particleboards because they are made up by outer layers of higher density and inner layer of lower density and maximum uniformity, which make them easy to work with and allow excellent finishes. They are characterized by the easiness with which paint can be applied and by moulding application work. Their particular density profile allows for important paint saving and less wear and tear of tools.
Similar to chipboards or particleboards, there are plain and paper /or melamine MDF, thin and thick panels. The standard dimensions are : 3mm to 25mm thickness and 1200mm x 2440mm (4' x 8') and 1830mm x 2440mm (6' x 8') size.
Tropical woods, rubberwoods and Acacia are commonly being used as the main raw materials for producing MDF in Indonesia and Malaysia. There are currently not less than 20 medium to large scale MDF manufacturers in these two countries. Nevertheless, China manufacturers stand out as the only capable Asian exporters in recent years competing with Indonesian and Malaysian MDF producers.
Many European countries, Italy in particular, are the main consumers in importing MDF regularly from Asian countries to maintain their traditional status in the furniture industry.
